#uncommonpeople - Pharoah

They sing. They dance. They play. They create. They show us to the secret corners of Paris. Each nurtures his or her own dreams, fears, ideas and passions. They all share a desire to express themselves, choose an unusual point of view and stay true to what they really are: uncommon people

“I’ve always been open to any kind of music, but I would never have imagined I’d be a rapper”.

Brought up in France by an Austrian mother and a Philadelphia-born American father, Pharoah is the product of a multicultural, avant-garde Paris.

The son of musicians, as a kid he played the piano and then the saxophone, like Pharoah Sanders, the American jazzman he is named after. A group of friends recently asked him to give them a hand with the baselines of a hip hop song. He agreed, and then everything came naturally, from the baselines to the lyrics, from the lyrics to the songs. He found himself rapping without even realizing it.

He’s turned his bedroom into a recording studio. The microphone is inside the wardrobe to soundproof it. Three friends join him once or twice a week to write and record songs. When they find themselves short of ideas, they go out and stroll the streets of Charonne, Belleville and République. Inspiration is just around the corner, but the problem is knowing which one.
